March 19 - Areas of Focus: Connectivity

March 19, 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We realize this is a difficult time for you and your family and everyone is doing their best to make this situation work. We are working diligently to meet the educational needs of your children. I have included information below that will help ensure we are all working to do the best we can for all children.

As always, if you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher and/r building administrator.

Areas of Focus:

This week teachers will be establishing communication with their students and checking in.   (March 16-20)

Let us know about your family’s connectivity. If you need access to the Internet, here are some resources to consider:

  1. If you have no Internet access:

    1. Service Electric is offering free 10x5 Internet service for 90 days for new customers during this ongoing national emergency. For more information on modem access and the 60-day financial grace period, please contact a SECTV Customer Service representative at: Toll Free in PA (800) 232-9100

    2. EveryoneON offers low cost Internet and is helping out families experiencing connectivity issues related to COVID-19

    3. Spectrum is offering FREE Internet Access to qualifying homes with students. Call  1-844-579-3743 to enroll.

    4. Kajeets Hotspots are available from the SVMS office but are limited!

  1. Your child’s teacher will be communicating with your children about what to expect in the coming weeks.

  2. They will review which tools they will be using to deliver instruction. Teachers will give your children time to practice and check-in before delivering instruction.

  3. Teachers or counselors will follow up with children who have not connected.

Teacher’s Virtual Office Hours

This week teachers will share with students:

  1. Method of preferred communication (email, Seesaw, Schoology, app)

  2. How can students get help if they need it- Virtual Office Hours

Asynchronous Learning

Teachers are preparing Asynchronous Learning, through which students can access and complete school work at different times and tempo. Check in with your child and ask them about their class schedule and how they plan to complete learning. If you have questions, contact your child’s teacher.

Schoology and Seesaw

Ask your child’s Teacher about securing the Schoology (3-12th Grade) or Seesaw (K-2) Parent access code. This will help you stay connected with learning at home. If you don’t have access to Schoology, please contact your child’s teacher.

What are best practices for eLearning at home?

Talk to your kids or follow up on communication from you child’s teacher about the following:

  1. Where/when will students work? What times?

  2. What classes will they work on? Which days of the week?

  3. When are they taking Screentime breaks?!

  4. When will they go outside and play?

  5. When can they connect online with friends and family?

Digital Citizenship Reminders

Please help us remind students about the basics of Digital Citizenship

  • Google Hangouts will be accessible for students between the hours of 10AM and 4PM

  • School devices are monitored by SVSD and student behavior on a school device should comply with the district Acceptable Use Policy. Students should use school devices for school work.
