Parent Guide: Understanding Jamf Parent & Student Devices

Saucon Valley School District is committed to providing a safe, secure, and focused digital learning environment for all students. To support this mission, student-issued devices are managed using Jamf—the industry-standard management and security platform built specifically for Apple devices.

Through Jamf, parents and guardians gain visibility and control over their child’s school-issued iPad or Mac, ensuring that learning stays at the center during school hours and at home.

What Jamf Does for Your Child’s Device

Jamf connects student devices seamlessly to district resources while maintaining robust safety protocols:

• Automatic App Distribution: Required instructional apps, books and digital tools are automatically installed without requiring personal Apple IDs or credit cards.
• Web Filtering & Internet Safety: Devices maintain content filtering rules to protect students from inappropriate online content both on campus and on home Wi-Fi networks.
• Data Privacy & Security: Student data remains protected in compliance with FERPA and COPPA standards, preventing unauthorized software or trackers from being installed.

Empowering Parents: The Jamf Parent App

While the district manages educational settings during school hours, parents have the ability to set healthy digital boundaries outside of the school day using the Jamf Parent mobile app (available on iOS and Android).

With Jamf Parent, guardians can:

• Restrict Specific Apps: Temporarily block access to social media, games or web browsers during homework time or bedtime.
• Set Device Schedules: Establish custom rules (e.g., "Bedtime" or "Study Time") that automatically lock down non-essential apps at designated hours.
• Filter Web Usage: Enable stricter content categories when the device is connected to your home network.
• View Location: Check the approximate location of the school device if misplaced (when location services are enabled).

How to Set Up Jamf Parent

1. Download the App: Install the free Jamf Parent app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store on your personal smartphone.
2. Open Jamf Self Service on Your Child's Device: Open the Jamf Self Service app on your child's school-issued iPad. Tap Settings then tap Jamf Parent QR Code to generate a QR code.
3. Scan & Pair: Open the Jamf Parent app on your smartphone, tap Get Started, select Scan QR Code and point your phone camera at your child's screen.
4. Start Managing: Once paired, you can immediately begin customizing rules, schedules and permissions for evening and weekend use.
