Music Philosophy & Long-Term Transfer Goals

Music is a vital and basic component in human cultures. It engages the total individual in acts of creating and performing and involves the intellectual, intuitive, emotional, and physical being.

Music education is an essential discipline accessible to all students, regardless of background, talent, or inherent ability. Through music, students develop responsibility, collaboration, flexibility, and problem-solving skills while learning to appreciate and respect the ideas and expressions of others.

Through increasingly complex listening and music-making experiences, students discover the intrinsic value of music and gain skills needed to form aesthetic interpretations of life’s events on a deeply emotional and personal level.

Music provides a means to explore cultures and reflects aspects of human thought, action, and experience. Understanding historical and cultural influences prepares students to live and work in communities that are increasingly diverse.

The richness of music contributes to higher levels of thinking and learning. The fundamental purpose of music education is to develop skills, knowledge, concepts, and sensitivity that convey the highest levels of human experience.
