Music students in NYC smile during their instrumental workshop

New York City -- At Saucon Valley, our student-centered approach means learning is designed to expand horizons, challenge perspectives and open doors.

On Friday, March 27, our high school music students traveled to New York City for an experience that brought classroom instruction into a real-world setting. Instrumental students worked directly with Broadway professionals Michael Dansicker and Michael Watson and engaged in a professional-level workshop focused on collaboration, precision and artistry.

Choral students participated in their own two-hour workshop. First, they vocalized with an Oscar-nominated musician and playwright. Then, students learned "Grease Got a Hold" from the musical The Outsiders. A member of the musical, Davis Wayne, taught them the song. Choir Director Lauren Sakasitz calls the experience "so intense." The workshop concluded with a talkback, which provided the students with insights from a professional -- a truly invaluable experience.

"It is the best trip we could take, and I will be taking them again. It was a perfect day," said Sakasitz.

Students also explored the city in chaperone groups, practicing independence and navigating one of the world’s most vibrant cultural centers. The day concluded with dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe and a Broadway performance of The Outsiders at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. There, students had the unique chance to see Wayne, the instructor who led part of the choir workshop, perform.

These opportunities reflect our commitment to putting students at the center of their learning. By connecting them with industry professionals and exposing them to diverse artistic communities, we help shape not only skilled musicians but thoughtful, confident young adults prepared to engage with the world around them.
