Program to be led by Dr. Jarrod Spencer, renowned sports psychologist from the Lehigh Valley
HELLERTOWN, PA — The Saucon Valley School District will launch a Mind of the Athlete Program for the Saucon Valley High School Athletic Department during the 2024-25 school year.
Dr. Jarrod Spencer, a renowned sports psychologist and founder of Mind of the Athlete, LLC, introduced the program at the district’s 2024 Teacher Convocation on August 19. The Mind of the Athlete program is designed to enhance the emotional health and performance of student-athletes, parents, and coaches across the district by addressing the increasing societal and mental pressures faced by athletes.
"Dr. Spencer is a respected professional in the sports psychology world, and we are thrilled to collaborate with him through the Mind of the Athlete Program," said Robert Frey, Director of Student & Community Relations at SVSD. "His expertise will be an invaluable resource in supporting the mental health and performance of our student-athletes. We are confident that this partnership will positively impact our entire district community."
As part of the program, Dr. Spencer will conduct nine site visits throughout the school year, delivering educational speeches to student-athletes, coaches, and parents, and consulting with SVSD administration. Topics will include “Sleep: The #1 Factor in Mental Health & Performance,” “Confidence: Deepening Your Self-Belief,” and “Positivity: How to Shift Out of Negative Thinking.” Parent speeches will be held in the evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A session.
The program will provide each member of the high school athletic department with copies of Dr. Spencer’s book, Mind of the Athlete: Clearer Mind, Better Performance, in paperback, audiobook, and e-book formats, along with a Mind of the Athlete notebook and a wristband bearing the message “clearer mind, better performance” as a daily reminder to prioritize emotional health.
Additionally, the program includes a license for the Mind of the Athlete curriculum, featuring 16 videos on topics such as positive thinking and confidence, as well as 15 audio CDs covering subjects like Mind of the Parent, Mind of the Coach, and Mental Endurance. This curriculum will be accessible 24/7 to everyone in the district, with corresponding worksheets to support the video content.
Dr. Spencer, a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania and five other states, has extensive experience working with athletes at various levels, including professional, Olympic, college, and high school. He resides in the Lehigh Valley and has been featured on CNN, BBC, Fox News, and ESPN Radio.
