Social Studies

Elementary

According to the National Council of Social Studies, Social Studies may be defined as “the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence”. The Saucon Valley Social Studies curriculum provides a spiraling study including history, geography, economics, government and civics, as well as the study of humanity and events that have individually and collectively shaped our nation and the world. As students develop a strong and effective understanding of Social Studies, they will be better equipped to make sense of the world in which they live. The knowledge acquired allows increased connections between major ideas and student understanding helping them to grow as active members of the global community.

Secondary

The Social Studies Department of Saucon Valley High School offers a number of diversified elective courses in addition to courses that are required for graduation. While knowledge of content is extremely important, it is equally important to provide our students with opportunities to engage in historical thinking, anthropology, archeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion and sociology. Ultimately, our curriculum is founded on the primary purpose of helping our students make informed and reasonable decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. For further information regarding course content and details, please click here to access the High School Program of Studies.
