Committee
In January of 2006, the district convened a representative group of stakeholders to undertake drafting a Wellness Policy to be submitted to the state by October of the same year. This Committee convened because President Bush signed the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act on July 30, 2004, prompting local districts that participate in the National School Lunch Program to develop these policies. SV’s Wellness Committee examined the requirements of the Act as well as investigated policies completed by Pennsylvania districts in its efforts to draft its policy.

District Policy
Over the course of 5 meetings during the 2005-2006 school year, the Committee drafted a policy and presented it to the board at the end of the school year. Following its approval on July 11, 2006, the district submitted its policy to the state.

According to the Act, the policy must consider 4 broad areas. These include:

  • Nutrition Education
  • Physical Activity
  • Physical Education
  • Other School-Based Activities

In addition, the act highlights nutrition guidelines and recommends compliance with the Nutritional Standards for Competitive Foods in PA Schools.

Ongoing Work
During the 2006-2007 school year, the Committee met quarterly to monitor progress and consider other activities to promote wellness during the year. For example, many changes have been made in the district’s cafeterias to encourage students to make better choices when buying their lunch. Therefore, Sandy Brocious, Food Service Coordinator, reported progress regarding cafeteria services to the board.

The Wellness Committee also selected priorities that guided its work this year. These include:

  • Make Banners – Are you making healthy choices?
  • District-wide TV Announcements/Thought of the Day
  • Tout the benefits of a healthy breakfast (consider communications home/newsletters/printouts in report cards)
  • Investigate a student representative from the High School

Panther Newsletter
In addition, the district, in conjunction with the Wellness Committee has teamed with Capital Blue Cross to offer staff and community access to information on a variety of health topics across the year. Each month, Capital Blue Cross gives the district payroll stuffers, posters and fliers as well as a newsletter for the district to distribute. The posters and flyers are distributed to the various departments.
